River Capital, working with CEFC, Invests in the Tiwi Islands Plantation Carbon Project
River Capital, alongside the Clean Energy Finance Corporation (CEFC), has invested in Australia’s largest First Nations-led carbon initiative in the Tiwi Islands, Northern Territory. Owned by the Tiwi Plantations Corporation and managed by Midway Pty Ltd, the project will deliver meaningful economic, social and employment benefits for the Tiwi people.
The project will establish 30,000 hectares of Eucalyptus pellita over 35 years, generating an estimated 5 million nature-based Australian Carbon Credit Units alongside high-quality timber products. The River Capital Tiwi Trust offers River’s co-investors with a unique investment opportunity underpinned by Australia’s transition to net zero.
Suzi Carp, Co-Founder and Director of River Capital, said: “We are proud to be involved in this transformational project. This investment is a rare opportunity to deliver financial, environmental and social impact at scale.”
Midway brings over 30 years’ forestry experience and has operated on the estate since 2018, with a trusted relationship with the Tiwi people. In February 2025, River Capital acquired Midway through a separately managed SPV. Today, Midway manages more than 52,000 hectares of plantations across Australia, with partners including Rio Tinto and MEAG. Building on this momentum, Midway has launched 1971 Capital, a natural capital investment platform managing institutional capital and delivering nature-based decarbonisation projects.
