Reflections from River Capital's Intern Program
What started as “Jim Assist”, a mentorship with River Capital’s Executive Director, Jim Craig. Now has transformed into two 12-week programs annually, offering exposure to fund management across public and private markets.
This isn't your standard "coffee-and-copying" internship.
So what does this look like in practice? We asked our recent interns to share their experiences, reinforcing why paying it forward to the next generation matters.
Compounding
Compounding at River Capital extends beyond investment returns. It's about accumulating knowledge, deepening relationships, and building community impact that grows over time. Our interns understood this instinctively, in Joey’s words, "Although you may not see River Capital mentioned in news articles weekly, it became apparent to me that despite this, it is a very well known, highly regarded institution. Bolstered by some very intelligent and reputable members, it was clear to me that beyond the usual analysis and frameworks of other funds was an intangible skillset being employed to generate successful, ethical and interesting theses.”
Engaged
We're active investors, and this approach shapes our internship program. Instead of interns observing quietly, we involve them in purposeful work that supports professional development.
Hannah reflected: "I really appreciated the team's openness, support, and willingness to involve interns in meaningful, real-timework and provide feedback when necessary."
"Attending some of the in-house learning sessions allowed me to build my financial knowledge and get to know some of the team members better." Joey noted.
Darius highlighted, "What I enjoyed most was the collaborative office culture and the genuine willingness of the team to share their knowledge. I felt valued and trusted with meaningful work which made a big difference in both my learning and confidence."
Agility
Our investment approach allows us flexibility to pursue the best opportunities, regardless of whether they're public or private, large or small. We foster the same adaptability in our interns' learning journey.
Cheryl described how this flexibility influenced her experience: “Despite being a Finance and Economics major, I have received great support from our Financial Controller through my process of working through tasks that are heavily accounting based, having discussions on how to improve my accounting knowledge as an individual.”
Finn shared how the experience broadened his perspective: "The intricacies of finding dynamic opportunities, working on behalf of a large investor community, and executing to deliver great returns, has shaped my perspective on the broader finance industry and will be carried forward through the rest of my career."
Concentration
We invest with conviction in businesses we understand deeply, and we encourage our interns to approach learning with the same focus. Their advice to future interns demonstrates this principle.
"Take initiative, ask thoughtful questions, ask for context and treat every task as an opportunity to learn and demonstrate your value," Hannah recommended.
Cheryl expressed, "Never be afraid to ask and try new things! It is always intimidating to ask and voice out your opinions at a professional setting, especially when it is your first internship experience. However, your advancement as an individual comes from speaking up and communication, in which everyone at River Capital is supportive of."
Looking Forward
Welcoming each new group of interns reminds us why supporting emerging talent matters. After all, the best investments, whether in companies or people, create lasting impact.
